Every man has at least two or three dress shirts in his wardrobe. Sometimes, dress shirt alone can be the centerpiece of a men’s outfit. If you are buying a dress shirt or choosing a one for your male friend, make sure you know enough about the shirt before you decide which one to buy. It’s more complicated than you think to choose a proper dress shirt. Due to the differences between the collars, cuffs, fits, fabrics and the cut of the shirts, dress shirts can be divided into many types.
Spread Collars Dress Shirts
Also known as Cutaway collars or Windsor collars, the wide collars of spread shirts are spread apart in the middle. This style of shirts is more formal. It is very common in Europe, especially in the UK. Spread collars dress shirts are best suited for men with long shaped faces.
Straight Point Collar Dress Shirts
This is the most common style you can found on men’s dress shirts. It also called standard collar shirts, regular collar shirts or point collar shirts. Compare to spread collar shirts, point collars shirts have narrower and longer collars, which has a slimming effect on the face. It is the best choice for men with round or heavy faces.
Dress Shirts with front buttons on the collars are called “Button Down Dress Shirts”. Button-down Shirt normally refers to a shirt with an American "button-down" collar introduced by Brooks Brothers in 1896. There are 2 kinds of collar styles for button-down dress shirts: Oxford button-down and hidden button-down. Oxford button-down shirts are very popular in less formal occasions, since men always feel more comfortable and relaxed when wearing them. It’s better not unbutton the collar.
French Cuff Dress Shirts
This kind of dress shirts are one of the most formal dress shirts. If you decide to wear a french cuff shirt, a pair of cufflinks or silk knots/fabric knots must be prepared. Cufflinks help fasten the double cuff of the shirts and yet create a distinguished appearance for a gentleman. Nowadays, french cuff dress shirts are often considered as fashion shirts. They are appropriate for both formal occasion and daily wear. The British usually call them "double cuff dress shirts".
Tab and Pinned Collar Dress Shirts
Tab collars have a tab or snap on each side for holding the collar points down. Pinned collars have a pin or bar that goes across the spread and fastens to each point. They are not very common styles and should always be worn with a neck tie. You can rarely see men wearing collar pins nowadays unless in old movies or TV shows like Mad Men. The fasteners on both of these collars force the tie upward a little, make the men who wear them look quite elegant.
Tuxedo Dress Shirts
Also called wing collar dress shirts. As we can tell from the name, this kind of shirts are normally worn with the tuxedo. The collars have no turndown and are shorter than normal dress shirts and tucked behind the bow-tie. These collars are reserved for formalwear, and the gentleman need not give them particular consideration unless morning or evening dress is required.
Detachable Collar Dress Shirts
Refer to shirts have detachable collars attached with collar studs. The collar is attached to the shirt by a pair of studs like those shown. The shirt has a tunic collar, a short upright band of fabric with a hole at the back and one on each side at the front. The stiff collar is attached at the back before the shirt is put on (and the tie placed under the collar for a turndown collar), then the shirt is put on, after which the front stud is pushed through the collar to fasten it.
Contrast Collar Dress Shirts
Refer to white collars on a colored or patterned shirt. It originated from detachable collars and often considered more formal than normal dress shirts.
