Silk knot cufflinks appears very in the history of shirt sleeve fasteners. When shirts first appeared in the early 16th century, what used to fasten the sleeves was called Cuff strings. Cuff Strings were very popular until the 19th century. When Louis XIV, the king of French, began to use"boutons de manchette", in English "sleeve buttons" to keep the end of shirt sleeves closed. Those buttons are normally made by glass and joined together by a linked chain. Later, Jeweled or painted studs has taken place of the paste-glass buttons. Diamonds studs and ornate gold links became quite popular among upper classes.
