What is Oxford Shirts and Why It's So Popular?

It's used be worn by polo players as a long sleeves sport shirt to protect them from the sun and a button at the collar to keep the flaps from hitting their faces. Nowadays, Oxford dress shirts can be worn in both formal and casual situations.

The word [Oxford] actually refers to the type of fabric it is made from instead of a style of shirt. The oxford cloth, which has a soft elevated woven pattern and good durability, is named for Oxford University by the Scottish mill which first wove it.

There many different kinds of oxford clothes, simple, plain Oxfords, woven, pinpoint etc. Many tailored, lightweight clothes are made by oxford cloth. Plain Oxford or pinpoint Oxford weaves are casual fabrics that are most often used to make button-down shirts. Royal oxford is a more luxurious version of the traditional oxford cloth and is generally used in combination with more formal dress shirts.

How did the oxford button-down shirt become a style icon?

The oxford cloth button-down shirt, named for the esteemed university, originated as a sport shirt. At the turn of the last century, polo players in England would wear formal, long-sleeved shirts made of oxford cotton breathable and sturdy basket-weave cloth. The collars were made with buttons to prevent them from flapping during matches, starting a trend soon adapted for tennis shirts as well. The oxford first appeared in the United States at the turn of the century, and its popularity took off in the 1950s, by which time the look had become associated with classic Ivy League style.
