3. Try not to match patterns of the same size or type. For example, with a wide-stripe shirt try a small repeat pattern like a pin dot or all-over novelty print.
4. Remember: vary the pattern size and scale for a harmonious effect. Strip-on-stripe is OK but watches the scale of the patterns. A wide stripe or tie works better on a narrow stripe shirt. Bold patterns should be paired with quieter ones: a bold plaid shirt with a subtly colored oriental print tie, for example.
5. Be confident. If it looks right to you, it probably is right.
6. Remember combinations that look good together.
A pale blue shirt with a yellow, red, burgundy, gold or navy tie.
A pale pink shirt with a navy blue or burgundy tie.
A pale tan shirt with a brown (or any shade of brown) tie.
A French blue shirt with a yellow, bright red, deep burgundy or gold tie.
