Tips on How to Dress for a Job Interview

You applied for a job and got an interview in a few days. Apart from preparing for some questions that may be raised by your potential employers, another thing you should consider is the job interview dress code. The proper dress code will create an impression on the employers that you are a serious and responsible person. If your job interview dress attire is correct, it is also a compliment to the interviewer. It sends a non-verbal signal of respect and appreciation. Of course getting your job interview dress right won't get you the job, but it will set the tone and make for an easier interview. So how to dress for a job interview?

Dress a little more formally than is the day-to-day rule in the company you are targeting. More often than not, conservative colors and clothes are safe with most people, while a daring stylish look may disqualify you from many positions. You should avoid too much jewellery, bright colored clothes, nail polish, short skirts and clothes like that. If you dress this way, your potential employers may think you do not really care about the job.

Job interview dress code for men

suits should be solid colors such as navy or dark grey. A white long sleeve shirt or a shirt coordinated with the suit is recommended. Ties and belts should not be too trendy. Make sure that socks match your suit and that shoes are clean and polished. Dark socks and leather shoes are usually safer. Hair should be neatly groomed, and take the time to shave, trim facial hair, and clean nails. Paying attention to these little details could help you feel more confident and comfortable.

Job interview dress code for women

A conservative dress or business suit with a dress shirt or blouse is the most professional choice. The suit should be solid color, too. And the suit skirt should be long enough. Shoes should be polished and hair neatly groomed. As to shoes, women should stay with a conservative pump with a mid level heel. Your hairstyle should also be conservative and easy to control. Professional hairstyle is the best. You do not want your hair to be the focus of attention. You want your skills and experience to be. So if necessary, wear your hair up. Wear minimal jewelry. Don't wear too much make-up and perfume.

For both men and women, the conservative route is normally the safest option. Such corporate apparel as a two-piece suit, in dark grey, navy or black is most suitable. There are many other tips. You can carry a portfolio or briefcase so you look professional and organized. Do not chew gum. Cover all tattoos. Turn off your cellphone to show respect for the interview.
